Dean, Tracy, Hannah, and Justin visited today. We gave them their Easter baskets. Justin got some boots and didn't know how to walk in them for a while. Too funny!! He loves the tractor and Hannah enjoyed icing some cookies for me.

Well, I haven't added anything to my blog for over a year now, but I've decided to get started again. Wish me luck! I'm going to try adding several pictures which were taken at Phil Walker Shoes in Lancaster when Justin was getting his first pair of shoes. Hope I'm successful!

#23 Thing - I made it!!!

Well, I'll have to admit that I really have enjoyed this experience. I would never have investigated many, if any, of these "things" had it not been presented to me in this way (and I don't mean the prize, either!). It's been nice to be able to explore these "things" here at work. I still have dial-up at home (I know, I know.... I need to get high speed internet!!) and it would have taken me forever to explore them all. I think I will continue to use my blog for my family (if they're interested!) and I kind of like the bloglines "thing" I have set up (although I need to place some other favorites on it. I will have to further familiarize myself with some of the other "things" I've learned about, but I need to let the cobwebs clear from my mind first. I'm going to Hilton Head next week. Maybe that will do it! If we have another Learning program like this, I'm sure I'll take part in it. I might even investigate the new 2.1 program on my own, depending on how heavy my work load is.

Many thanks to all of the "team" members who have worked so hard to present all of this and spent so much time helping those of us who have trouble getting new "things" to soak in. A big thanks to Jan for encouraging us and allowing us to use work time to further our horizons.

I was slightly familiar with MySpace, since I hear so many people talking about it. My daughter and son-in-law, and my son and daughter-in-law have MySpace sights, so I had asked them just what they were all about. It was interesting to check out all of the sites that are in the Learning 2.0 lesson. I can see how having a sight could be addictive, which concerns me a little, but there are certainly worse things to be addicted to!! As long as it doesn't consume your thoughts and actions too much, I guess it's harmless. I can see good points and bad points to these social networking sites. They having the potential of bringing out the "best" and "worst" in people. The only way I can see that they would be very useful in the workplace is if you would share ideas with other library workers. I can't see me doing that any time soon, but who knows??

Okay, I know I sound like a broken record, but I really don't see a need to subscribe to any podcasts at this time in my life. Once again, it's wonderful technology, but I would rather be talking with someone, listening to nature, or a number of other things than having earphones on listening to "programs". Music maybe, but even though I love music and listen to it when I'm in the car by myself, I don't listen all that much. I think it's because I'm a very visual type person. I need to see what's going on. I wouldn't have made it back in the days when all we had were radios, would I? So, from this blog entry, I'm sure you must realize that I'm not taking part in this Library 2.0 program for the MP3 player. I'm not sure what I'll do with it when I get it. Maybe it will be like the cell phone. Once I got one, I wondered what I did without it. Time will tell. I listened to a Jim Cramer podcast, an NPR podcast, and several others. I think it will take much more time "investigating" before I can find a "favorite".

Well, as we've been warned, there's some "crappy" stuff out there and some unsavory comments that make me wonder if people don't just have too much time on their hands. But, overall, investigating YouTube was very interesting. Occasionally, I'll hear about something on YouTube, but have never been curious enough to check it out. Now, I will probably be more inclined to do so. I found some interesting entries about Libraries 2.0, but somehow came across the one which I have chosen to embed into my blog. Hope I'm successful! My daughter is an elementary education school teacher, so I'm interested in things related to that. I loved this teacher, Mrs. Cassidy's, approach to using the blog and incorporating it into her classroom learning. I'm not sure exactly how it might relate to use in a library, except that it is a good learning/teaching tool which can be shared, if one chooses to use it that way. That's always a good thing. I also found more of Lee Lefever's "Plain English" videos, which I find very entertaining and informative. My simple mind loves "plain" explanations!! Well, here's the video I'm attempting to "embed" in my blog.

I went, I looked, I still can't imagine using any of these for work purposes. I love maps and like the GoogleMaps site. I don't know that I would use it for anything other than getting directions or looking up addresses, but I would enjoy playing around with it. Once again, it's finding the time to do it. There sure are a lot of things out there that are interesting, but I'm afraid I'm not inventive enough to figure out just how they can help me. It seems they would just take up more of my time. I am enjoying learning about them, however. Thanks, Learning 2.0!!

WOE IS ME

Well, here I am, creating my first ZOHO article. I'm a fifty-nine year old, lowly library associate trying to "master" all of these new "things" in the Learning 2.0 program. I shouldn't say "master". I'm really just trying to muddle my way through all of them hoping to retain a little of each new "thing" I've read about and experienced through the program.

My more computer literate children are impressed that I'm tackling this project and my small group of good friends was very impressed that I have my own blog and that I have learned about wikis (they thought it sounded like a dirty word, but I assured them it isn't). They don't know what a wiki is, but they're impressed never the less. I was able to explain what a blog is, but I couldn't begin to explain what a wiki is. I guess I need a little more work on the wikis.

Well, I believe this is enough for my first time out. I don't think I'll publish this, since I'm sure no one else would be interested in it.

Oh, my! I guess I forgot to blog about Rollyo!! Thanks to Jo, I'm "catching up". I registered on Rollyo and created a "My Travelsites" place so that when I want to check on flights or hotels, I can just check Rollyo. Not that I do that much traveling, but it's fun to dream! Okay, I think I'm caught up now. On to this weeks' "things". I'm a day behind already, since I took a vacation day yesterday.

After having read this lesson, I was still not clear as to how to add my blog to the list of "Favorite Blogs", so I went to the workshop and Lorraine was very helpful. Now I think I've got it. If I get brave and figure out what I want to add to the other "Favorites", I might do that also. For now, just completing the assignment has used enough "brain power" for one day. I still have work to do!

Okay!! Now I know what a wiki is. Just don't ask me to explain it to anyone. I hate to sound like a broken record, but once again, this was very interesting, but I don't know that I'll ever use it. It's great that anyone can add to these websites. And, I hadn't realized that Wikipedia isn't a "real, researched" dictionary/encyclopedia. That's probably why I have been able to understand the definitions that I have looked up on Wikipedia. I don't always do well with Webster's!! It's also interesting to see the different "forms" these websites take, and the varied information you can find on each of them. There certainly are a lot of creative people out there!! So, on to #17 thing!

I read all five of the "Perspectives on the impact of Web 2.0 on libraries" from the OCLC newsletter. I think I should have stuck to just two, which was suggested in the assignment, since my head was spinning again by the time I read them all. I guess I understood and liked the first one, "Away from the Icebergs", more than the others. When one starts talking about the "future" of this "web/computer stuff", I really get bogged down (or should I say "blogged down"?). I believe our library is fairly progressive when it comes to trying new things and not being "left behind" as far as the Web 2.0 goes. Just the fact that we have the opportunity to participate in this Library 2.0 program proves this point.

Oh my goodness!!! I had seen the Technorati website before (one of the previous assignments), so I thought this would be a simple assignment. Boy, was I wrong!! I think I'm trying to pack too much technology into my little pea brain and it's not fitting well at all. I think it's going to take some time and effort to digest it all. It's all very interesting, but I still doubt that I'll use a lot of it. I get frustrated spending so much time "looking", but not finding all that much that I'm really interested in. Of course, I'm the first person to admit that I'm not an intellectual type, so that probably contributes to the problem. I'm a "people person", so I'd rather be talking to someone face to face than reading their website. Maybe I should try "talking" with someone on the computer. What's that called??

Wow! Did I ever get bogged down reading all of this information. I clicked on every highlighted word or phrase and read through the information. I got a little overwhelmed more than once. When I went to the del.icio.us website I think I did okay. I'm registered and have three bookmarks so far, two of which have to do with food/recipes. Go figure!! Okay, I'm ready to tackle the next "thing".

I have now opened an account on LibraryThing and have added 5 titles which I have read recently (one I'm just getting ready to read). I'm not sure that I'll use this much, since I don't read books nearly as much as magazines, but it was kind of fun learning about it and opening the account and adding my list of 5 titles. Well, I have my account set up on Bloglines, thanks to Whitney. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it might be, probably because I checked out all of the "how to" sites and watched/listened to one of them three times before going to the workshop. Doing your homework really does help, I guess!! It should be interesting to see what, if anything pops up for me to check out. I just can't figure out how I'm going to have time to keep up with everything. I might have to get high speed internet at home instead of my Dial-Net. Ugh!! I will have to admit that it's all kind of fun.

Okay... my thoughts on technology. I love the things that I'm able to do with the new technology I've learned, but oh my, there's so much more out there that it simply boggles my mind!! I think I'm getting too old to understand a lot of it, but more power to those who do understand and use it to its full potential. I admire you all! I do like the looks of those donuts though!

Well, I got pretty "bogged down" with the mashup business. It's getting too complicated for my "pea brain"! I did, however, like some of them, especially the Flikr Color Pickr. I love color, especially bright colors, so I liked all of the bright colors found on this sight. It totally amazes me that this all can be done! And how do people find the time to explore all of this?? That's all for now.

My assignment was to add a link for something I found on Flickr. I love to cook (and eat) and love recipes. This is the link I got when I typed in "recipes", with lots of pretty pictures, many including the recipes. There are a lot to look at, that's for sure! This dessert looks yummy!

Well, after much contemplation, I've decided the easiest of the 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners is Habit 2: Accept responsibility for your own learning. Not that I'm good at jumping in and learning, but I do know that it's my responsibility to take the initiative to learn, even though I usually need lots of help with learning some things, especially those things electronic or computer related. This is probably because of the hardest of the 7 1/2 Habits ... for me, which is Habit 4: Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner. I have confidence in myself once I learn something, but I'm often intimidated at the thought of learning something new. Also, I'm not a competitive person. That's all for now!
